ABOUT “THE CHARLINE” AWARD HONOREE ANYA GROKHOVSKI, DMA

Anya Grokhovski earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in piano performance from the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow. Before moving to the United States in 1989, she served on the faculty of the Gnessin State College. In 1991, a staff accompanist position at the University of Texas at San Antonio initially brought her to San Antonio, TX, where she has since built a career as a respected pianist and arts leader.

She was born into a family of professional musicians. Her father was a violinist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and her mother is a distinguished violin teacher. This environment gave Anya early and constant exposure to music. In the U.S., she was honored to serve as accompanist for the legendary bass-baritone William Warfield. Her performance career includes recordings with the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, several European national radio networks, and several solo and chamber music albums. She has appeared at festivals and concert venues throughout Europe, Russia, Mexico, and the United States, including Carnegie Hall.

Anya’s passion for music, her commitment to San Antonio, and her international connections helped inspire the creation of a new cultural nonprofit, Musical Bridges Around the World. With the support of local music enthusiasts, she launched a series of intimate salon concerts in 1998. By the next year, the series expanded to the historic San Fernando Cathedral, bringing artists from around the world to perform each season.

Educational outreach began in 2001, with performances and eventually expanded to include curricula for schoolchildren. Programming for senior communities followed in 2010. In 2018, the leaders of the San Antonio International Piano Competition asked Anya to guide the competition’s future. Under her leadership, it was reimagined as The Gurwitz International Piano Competition, with editions held in 2020 and 2024 through Musical Bridges Around the World. The organization also assumed administration of the Colburn-Pledge Music Scholarship in 2020 to support young string players preparing for careers in classical music, initially created by two former members of the San Antonio Symphony in 1986. Musical Bridges expanded into film in 2023 with the release of its first feature documentary, The Quilt: A Living History of African American Music. The film teaches about the evolution of African American musical traditions and their influence on music today.

Under Anya’s leadership, the organization has received several significant recognitions, including the 2019 Fair Saturday Award in Bilbao, Spain, and the 2025 Sister Cities International Award for Innovation in Arts and Culture.

What began as a small, family affair now reaches more than 30,000 people each year in the greater San Antonio area through programs that serve children, seniors, military communities, and the general public. The organization also reaches millions globally through its online presence and represents San Antonio on the international music scene. Anya continues to guide Musical Bridges Around the World as its Chief Executive Officer and Artistic Director and remains dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission and global impact.
